CLUE CASE STUDY
Project Overview
Role & Responsibilities: User Research, Prototyping, UI/UX Design
Duration: 12/2020 – 02/2021
Tools: Figma, Marvel
Clue, a menstrual health app developed by BioWink GmbH in Berlin, is dedicated to promoting women’s reproductive health. The app features three primary functions: tracking and predicting menstrual cycles, analyzing health status, and providing access to scientific articles on reproductive health. Clue Plus, the app’s premium subscription service, serves as a major revenue stream for the company.
Research
I conducted extensive research by analyzing user feedback on the App Store. Key issues identified included:
The requirement of a subscription for previously free features.
-
High membership costs.
-
Unnecessary additional features.
-
A poorly designed layout.
-
Mandatory account creation during the onboarding process.
-
A limited number of symptom options.
-
An outdated user interface.
-
Frequent app crashes.
User Journey Map & Personas
Based on user research and observations, I identified three core areas for improvement:
-
Enhancing the initial user experience.
-
Optimizing the advertising strategy for paid subscriptions.
- Introducing a pregnancy tracking feature.
Core Functions Adjustment
The redesign aimed to address user concerns and enhance the overall experience. Key improvements included:
-
Streamlined Homepage: Removed the intrusive subscription advertisement that previously dominated the homepage, creating a more welcoming interface.
-
Improved Navigation: Made the frequently used “Track” feature more accessible and simplified the bottom menu for better user navigation.
-
Content Accessibility: Ensured that users could still access valuable articles on reproductive health without requiring a subscription, addressing concerns about limited free content.
-
Symptom Tracking: Consolidated all symptom options onto a single page, reducing the need for excessive swipes. The previous design required 29 swipes; the redesign streamlined the process to just three clicks and one swipe.
- Recording Function: Relocated the recording function to the same page, overlaying it for easier access by sliding it up. This adjustment significantly improved convenience and user-friendliness.
The redesign addressed user pain points by simplifying navigation, enhancing accessibility, and improving the app’s overall functionality. These changes not only improved user satisfaction but also positioned Clue as a more intuitive and user-focused menstrual health app.
